Detecting and representing contacts in general 3-D blocks system is the key problem for 3-D DEM and DDA analysis. The authors have proposed a new method for this key problem. All 3-D contact are classified into seven simple and easy-to-understand types in this paper. The new method (penetration edges method) for contacts test has many advantages: the amount of calculation is small; the method for contact test is robust; and it is easy to code into computer program. Actually, the new method has been incorporated into a 3D program and the method works fast and well.
