Nitrous oxide (N_2O) and methane (CH_4) emissions from power plant processes are presently reported for the use of greenhouse gas inventories by utilizing emission factors in calculations. This study was launched to collect information on the formation of these gases in combustion processes and to analyze the reliability of the emission factors. The information reported in literature and measured by boiler manufacturers was summarized. Nitrous oxide and methane emission measurements were made in 13 different Finnish power plants with a total of 21 different operational conditions representing the variety of the present power plant capacity in Finland. It appeared that the N_2O emissions reported in the Finland's greenhouse gas inventories are generally higher than the real emissions. Especially the emissions of fluidized bed combustion with peat and wood biomass were significantly lower than evaluated by emission factors.
