Agricultural sources represent a significant portion of non-CO_2 emissions from both developed and developing countries. In many cases, these sources are also expected to grow rapidly in the future due to escalating demand for animal products and adoption of energy intensive agricultural practices in developing countries. While uncertainties in agricultural emission estimates are relatively high, they can be addressed through adoption of some improved approaches. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) made significant improvements to its agricultural greenhouse gas inventory as part of its annual update to the Inventory of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks for 1990-1999. Changes and refinements were made to the emission estimation methodologies used for methane emissions from enteric fermentation and manure management, and nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural soil management.
