The behaviour of shape memory alloys is associated with a solid-solid phase transition from a parent phase called austenite (a) to a produced phase called martensite (m)and its modelling is strongly related to the definition of a specific coherency energy. In the absence of a good knowledge about the nucleation and growth of martensite into austenite leading to the exact form of this energy, it can be helpful to use a plasticity-like phenomenological modelling. Following the notion of "constrained equilibrium", such a modelling is proposed in this paper. It is based on an assumed but never explicitly defined non-convex specific free energy function and two independent normal dissipative processes. The evolution laws of the phase transition are derived in the particular case of pseudo-elasticity by extension of the principle of maximum dissipation. This modelling is also able to take account for the history dependence of shape memory alloys behaviour.
