Past, Present and Future in Seismic Response Control of Civil Engineering Structures

Implementation research on seismic response control of civil engineering structures has been carried out in two stages. The first stage, in the latter half of the 1980s, pursued feasibility. The second stage, since the completion of AMD system in the Kyobashi Seiwa Building in 1989, has focused on full-scale applications. We are now ready to enter the third stage, whose ultimate goal is semi-active control that achieves structural response control during extremely large earthquakes. This paper reviews the past research trend of control in the civil engineering field. Then, the present research state is discussed again and difficulties are described. Moreover, in order to better promote the application of seismic response control from the viewpoint of long-term practical use, this paper discusses the future direction, including issues concerning control system maintainability and renewability.
