Choosing the optimum magnet pole piece shape is a challenging task for the motor design engineer. Using an inner rotor profile, this paper will evaluate a number of rotor magnet configurations to establish the best performance versus rotor cost tradeoffs available for a 3.38" OD brushless PM servo motor. The University of Glasgow SPEED design program will be used to evaluate motor performance using 2 basic magnet shapes with 2 arc widths. Peak torque, continuous torque, cogging torque, and general torque ripple and motor constant (Km) will constitute the performance criteria.
