A brushless DC motor has been designed specifically for the application of an electric bicycle. The motor is integrated into the front hub of a bicycle wheel to allow easy conversion of a traditional bicycle. An electromechanical finite element simulation was executed, design trade-offs made, and a prototype constructed. The motor is powered by 36 volts from 10.5 kg (23.1 lbs.) of Ni-Zn batteries.
