Modern control systems are becoming ever more capable and complex, frequently combining PLC, motion control, operator interface and communications using a single programming environment. Developments such as the Logix/Netlinx architecture from Rockwell Automation provide the ability to engineer complete manufacturing solutions using a single fully integrated control system, even when the machine concerned is large and complex. The broad capability and enhanced flexibility resulting from these developments continue to present challenges to users in optimising the hardware, and efficiently performing the programming, commissioning and maintenance activities. Compatible tools for integrating technical activities have clearly not matched the product enhancements. Rockwell is taking the lead in closing this gap by expanding their Motion Book initiative and merging the Pre-sale activities such as sizing, selection and analysis with Post-sale activities such as programming, commissioning and maintenance. The use of identical models and algorithms in the sizing and operating environments allows a seamless bridge between offline and online processes. These software tools help the user to analyse and optimise the choice of hardware, and to simulate and develop much of the application structure and parameters offline. The results can then be used directly in the hardware, ensuring full compatibility of data and behaviour once the machine is running. The result is a powerful Techno-business environment for selection, development, operation and maintenance of complete machine solutions. This paper describes how such an environment can help develop and control the technical data for complex applications right through the business cycle. Architecture and design issues particularly relating to merging of local and web-based operation are also discussed.
