The paper will show an alternative approach to designing the pole geometry in SR motors, which reduces torque ripple and increases the efficiency of the SR motor. These geometries are of special interest in the design of 2 and 3 phase motors, where torque ripple remain a major limitation. The paper will analyze the performance of conventional and these alternative geometries as well as tradeoffs between the conventional and these alternative designs. Results obtained from an actual motor implementation will validate this discussion.
