ENERGY STAR is the national symbol for energyrnefficiency and environmental performancernrecognized by roughly 70% of the American people.rnIn September 2006, the U.S. EnvironmentalrnProtection Agency (EPA) extend the brand tornindustrial plants by awarding the first ENERGYrnSTAR labels to plants that had demonstrated energyrnperformance in the top quartile of energy efficiencyrnusing a sector-specific energy benchmarking andrnrating tool. Currently, four plant types are eligible tornearn the ENERGY STAR: motor vehiclernmanufacturing, cement, petroleum refining, and wetrncorn milling.rnThe US EPA has observed that energy performancernrating and recognition systems can help to drive thernimprovement of both facility and sector energyrnefficiency. This paper describes the rationale forrndeveloping a rating and recognition program forrnindustrial facilities, how the EPIs are developed, andrnprocess and requirements that have been establishedrnfor awarding the ENERGY STAR label.
