In this paper we address the problem of phase recovery of a complex signal with a real valued source based on th'e optimization of a real Constant Modulus criterion also referred to as Single-Axis Consant Modulus (SA-CM) criterion. Exact expression of the minima of the criterion are furnished when the signal is corrupted with Gaussian noise. The conditions under which the criterion admits only global minima leading to perfect phase restoration are derived for PAM and VSB modulations. These conditions are expressed as simple bounds on the dispersion constant of the criterion. Under these conditions it is shown that the derivative of the SA-CM cost function can be used as a new phase detector in a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) loop implementation, for instance, as an efficient blind phase tracking solution.
