Folks, I agree with that statement from the Chronicle. I think that something out of the ordinary and very unique to the human experience occurred in 1953 and... in 1994. In today's fast-paced and media driven world, it's hard to put the kibosh on anything and keep it quiet. What happened in Michigan in 1994, a mere nine years ago, quickly made national headlines. For all practical purposes, it was impossible to cover up. I do not believe that this was the case back in 1953 when the Kinross Incident occurred. I also believe that it goes without saying that our military has a tendency to hide things from us. Just last f summer, a story broke about secret biological testing that was done by the U.S. Navy on a number of destroyers I and their crews back in the late 1960s. The sailors from those ships were all intentionally placed aboard a virtual testing ground for the military. The Navy, faced with this uncontrollable news outbreak, admitted that they had done this and would see to it that those men affected would be cared for medically. You can find examples of this form of military cover-up throughout the country's history. Everything from Agent Orange in Viet Nam to the nuclear testing of the 1950s, where thousands of unknowing military personnel were subjected to radiation for test purposes. I think that it goes without saying that the U.S. military has the means, methods and, as yet, ... an unknown motive for harboring secrets about the Kinross incident and numerous others. Now that said, I need to be clear that as a career military person, I harbor no animosity toward the federal government or our military. Authors like Kevin Randall, many others and I have served honorably in the military and with much pride. All it means is that, to us, as studiers of the human condition, there is definitely something questionable happing here. It happened in 1953 and... it happened in 1994 and odds are better than good... that it's going to happen in the future. We, like many others are just posing the query. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Kinross Incident and yet... there's still no "golden" answer to the question. Thank you.
