AISI 316L stainless steel was laser surface treated with graded composite coating (Fe-SiC-Ni-Cr) containing SiC as a major composition (40-80 %wt.) to improve its surface hardness. When the laser energy density was about 20 J/mm~2, the laser treated region exhibited sublayers with hard region (1200 HV). When it was increased to 66 J/mm~2, the laser treated zone was free from hard region and exhibited homogeneity in hardness (700 HV) & microstructure (fine columnar dendrites).
