ROOT FLAWS OF FRICTION STIR WELDS - AN ELECTRON MICROSCOPY STUDY

Friction stir welding is a reliable process and only sporadically welding flaws do occur. In this study root flaws were examined, which cause only partial bonding of the welded material in contrast to another welding flaw designated as "lack of penetration" which is essentially an unbonded part of the weld. The origin of root flaws is not fully understood yet, but supposedly they are related to oxide scales, always present on aluminium surfaces. In the present work 3 welds of the material AA 6013 were investigated. Root flaws were created intentionally by varying preoxidation treatments. Before friction stir welding the surface oxide layers on the aluminium plates were examined by transmission electron microscopy for comparison with the oxide remnants found within the weld zone. The root flaws in the friction stir welds were detected by non destructive ultrasonic inspection. Subsequently, root flaws were examined by optical-, scanning electron- and transmission electron microscopy. The characteristic structure of the root flaws actually suggests that this kind of welding flaw is caused by the pre-existing surface oxide phases.
