摘要

The development of embankment and tailings dam engineering in South Africa over the pastrntwo decades has met with many challenges, one of which was the use of geotextiles as filters. The investigation into design practice and insitu geotextile filter performance at various dam sites which led to the development and use of a laboratory performance test procedure is described along with the investigations into the failure of the filter drainage system of dams. It is concluded that certain geotextiles may be used as filters where replacement is practicable, and as an adjunct to the filter system of embankment and tailings dams where replacement is impracticable. Recommendations on installation practice are included.
