Since the partial collapse of the E. W. Brown Station Unit 2, 9 cell, Marley cooling tower in 2000, the station has taken a proactive approach to ensure that this type of failure will not occur in the future. Inspections by an independent contractor have been conducted annually on each cooling tower to monitor structural integrity, performance, and deterioration rates. Two wooden towers have been replaced with FRP towers, and another one is scheduled for major work in 2006. This paper will discuss lessons learned from the collapse on one tower, and the resulting project details associated with the construction of the two new FRP towers.
