The federal Highway Administration is developing a Real-Time traffic Adaptive Control System or RT-TRACS to improve traffic control by performing signal optimizations in real-time rather than basing signal timing on historical data. RT-TRACS is designed to select the strategy, from a number of alternatives, that best responds to the current traffic conditions and geometric configuration. When conditions dictate, RT-TRACS can automatically switch to another appropriate strategy. This paper presents background information on RT-TRACS, evalaution methodology, and preliminary evaluation resutls based on prototypes of alternative real-time traffic signal control strategies.
