Based on the Euler-Meusnier sphere for representing surface curvature geometry, a generic mill cutter representative sphere that enwraps cutter surface, and provides guidelines to curvature gouge avoidance in curved surface machining is introduced. The method allows curvature gouge analysis on end, torus and ball mill cutters to be carried out under the same criterion using similar methods. Machining performance of mill cutters is evaluated using these envelope spheres. The study shows that for end and torus cutters, gouge avoidance and surface quality conditions are determined by cutter size and inclination angle, and provides a simple method for determining the exact gouge-free inclination angle for given cutter and surface at cutter contact (CC) point. The advantage of torus mill cutter over end mill cutter in curvature gouge avoidance and its drawback in the quality of machined surface under same cutter size and inclination angle are also demonstrated.
