This paper explores micro cutting mechanisms using instrumented conical scratch tests, which are a conventional method of finding material characteristics. The results of several scratch tests on brass have been interpreted for use in determining the parameters and mechanisms in micro machining, such as micro chip formation mechanisms, friction coefficients, elastic recovery, and plowing. A set of plowing tests was also conducted on the same material with a cylindrical blank tool. A model for plowing forces has been suggested for cases where the uncut chip thickness is less than the critical chip thickness. The results can be used for determining the cutting forces during different micro machining processes, such as micro milling operations.
