Automatic handling of textiles, leather, meat and fish requires a gripper technology different from that used on mechanical parts. These objects are individual in shape, texture and softness requiring grippers that can handle these variations and in some cases obey strict hygienic rules. This paper describes a new gripper design base on contact adhesion by freezing water present on the surface of the products. The object is released by reversing the thermal flow on the gripping surface. The paper reports on laboratory experiments which have demonstrated that the obtainable gripping force and release times are within requirements for industrial use.
