The paper presents the results of experimental investigations on overvoltages in the 10 kV and 6 kV networks at switching-in and switching-out of 10 kV/0.4 kV and 6 kV/0.4 kV transformers and 6 kV motors with vacuum switching devices. A large number of investigations had been performed, particularly in the self-consumption distributing networks of thermal power plants. In addition, the comparative investigations of overvoltages at vacuum and minimum oil circuit-breakers operation in the same network configurations, were carried out. Switchings-in and switchings-out by means of vacuum circuit-breakers give rise to the considerable overvoltages. At switching-in, preliminary ignitions of the electric arc occur. The overvoltages with high steepnesses enter the power transformer windings and stator windings of high-voltage motors and significantly stress their interturn insulation. At switching-out, the phenomenon of current chopping before its passage through natural zero value takes place. High overvoltages appear, which stress the insulation to earth of power transformer windings and stator windings of high-voltage motors. On the basis of the elaborated analysis of overvoltage phenomena, the measures and means for reduction and limitation of overvoltges at vacuum switching devices operation are suggested.
