A Re-examination of the Optimal Overbooking Policies for US Major Airlines

摘要

The author presented a paper that investigates optimal overbooking policies for US majorrnairlines in the TRF 2000 annual conference. The paper had several shortcomings and thernconclusion was somewhat misleading. This paper is a revised version of the previouslyrnpresented paper. The revised paper resolved the shortcomings of the previous paper, andrnprovides different conclusions. The results of the revised paper imply that, although therernis a significant negative overbooking effect (the more the number of passengers bumped inrnthe current period, the lower the passenger revenue of an airline in the future periods), nornairline should decrease overbooking levels, because the positive side of overbooking is sornstrong that it more than offsets its negative side.
