In April 1999, Texas passed legislation requiring the completion of a grain transportation study.rnThis article examines current and future grain transportation issues in Texas by using survey data fromrnthat study. Evidence of changes in transport uses and reasons for these changes are explored throughrnsurveys of grain-handling firms and interviews with trucking company and rail firm representatives.rnThe data reveal that the use of truck transport is increasing, due partly to dissatisfaction with railrnservice, while rail remains viable for grain-handling firms located on high-density corridors and forrntrips longer than 250 miles. Other factors for changes in rail service that have evolved during thernderegulation era and their impacts on modal choice are also explored.rnThis article also examines future issues in grain transportation and makes recommendationsrnthat the state of Texas should consider adopting to improve the transportation infrastructure andrnprovide for more efficient transportation of grain. Although the study concentrates on Texas, manyrngrain-producing and gain-importing states face similar issues; thus, the analysis and recommendationsrnshould prove useful beyond the Texas border.
