Molybdenum powder is manufactured in a two step process starting from either Ammonium Di Molybdate (NH_4)2Mo_2O_7 or molybdenum trioxide (MoO_3). In the first step, usually carried out in rotary calciners, (NH_4)2Mo2O_7 or MoO_3 is reduced to MoO_2. A subsequent processing step further reduces the MoO_2 to form Mo metal powder. The present study investigates the effect of key processing parameters (starting raw material, heating rate and reduction temperature) on the properties of the reduced powder from the first stage reduction process. A design of experiment approach was used to understand the effect of the processing parameters. The bulk density and surface area of the reduced powders were found to depend on the type of starting raw material and reduction temperatures. The heating rate was found to have no effect on the properties of the reduced powder.
