Venemo Dam is a 240 meters long and 64 meters high rockfill dam with an upstream facing of asphalt concrete constructed in the period from 1960 to 1964. The flood diversion takes place through spillway gates, and not by way of a free overflow crest which is the most common design in Norwegian rockfill dams. The analysis for Venemo Dam therefore focuses on reliability of the flood diversion works. Songa Dam is located 7 km upstream and a dam break will affect the probability of failure for Venemo Dam. In 1997 a separate analysis was carried out for Songa Dam, and total annual probability of failure was calculated as 2.3 * 10~(-4). A dam break of this dam will in any case lead to the collapse of Venemo Dam, irrespective of whether the gates here are operated successfully. Annual probability of failure for Venemo Dam is calculated to 2.48 * 10~(-4), and the major contributor to this is the breaching of Songa Dam. This event represents as much as 96% of total annual probability of failure for Venemo Dam. The analysis for Venemo Dam verifies that dam break of upstream dams is the most serious threat to dams downstream in the same watercourse.
