A number of energy efficiency programsrnseek a reduction in the energy intensity ofrnmanufacturing processes. However, promotingrnenergy efficiency through productivityrnimprovements is not a widely accepted practice.rnAs such, accepted methods used to calculaternenergy savings from productivity improvementsrnare not prevalent.rnThis paper will first review several existingrnenergy efficiency programs that promoternmanufacturing productivity increases: NortheastrnUtilities’ PRIME Program and the DOErnIndustrial Assessment Centers. In conjunction,rnthis paper will review the methods used tornquantify energy savings for each program.rnAdditionally, the relationship betweenrnproductivity improvements (specifically LeanrnManufacturing techniques) and energy use willrnbe explored in detail. Lean techniques reducernenergy use in several ways, which will also berndiscussed. This paper will apply therncategorization of energy use reduction types andrnequipment types to develop new methods forrncalculating energy savings from productivityrnimprovements.
