The Eppler 61 (E61) Aerofoil has been found to be extremely sensitive to disturbances at low test Reynoldsrnnumbers. Different institutions investigating this aerofoil report widely varying aerodynamic results obtained inrnsimilar facilities. Tests have been performed on the E61 in the Departments 2’ x 2’, open return, low turbulencernintensity tunnel, using a fast response strain gauge balance to measure lift and drag.rnAerofoil behaviour at low Reynolds numbers was found to be strongly influenced by the background acousticrnlevel and the presence of single-frequency tonal noise. This provides a new explanation for the variability inrntest results in different facilities reported by many investigators. Further, the response of the aerofoil to acousticrndisturbances was dominated by the wind tunnel acoustic response. This finding implies that the consequences ofrnacoustic disturbances at low Reynolds numbers will depend on the facility in which the aerofoil it is tested.rnThese findings also offer new opportunities for performance modification of UAV aerofoils by the use of selected noise inputs.
