Using light microscopy, the microstructure of a series of metallographically-prepared samples of historic wrought iron was characterized. The flange, web, and associated transition region of an I-beam (circa 1850s) from the Wheeling Custom House were examined. Extensive diamond pyramid (Vickers) microindentation hardness resting was performed allowing comparison with measurements on USS MONITOR hull plate.
