Networked Communications enable the safe, effective and co-ordinated operation of many nationalrnand international events from military task forces, disaster relief operations to national security andrnlarge sporting or entertainment event logistics. The use of airborne assets including Unmanned AirrnVehicle Systems (UAVS) provides rapidly deployed and powerful capabilities.rnThis market is starting to grow and 3S predicts a rapid acceleration of the use of UAS in military, civil,rnand commercial applications. Astrium 3S is involved in UK and European government sponsoredrnstudies aimed at facilitating the safe use of UAVs in shared airspaces such as the joint ESA and EDArninitiative for the demonstration of a UAV flying in non-segregated airspace using secure andrnsustainable satellite communications.rnThe use of Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) SATCOM capability, enhances current and futurerngenerations of UAVs to provide greater reach within a deployed theatre. To meet Operation needs andrnexpectations; smaller, lighter, faster and cheaper SATCOM systems are being developed. Thesernsystems must integrate seamlessly into existing command and control architectures and imageryrnexploitation cells to utilise the extension to ISTAR.
