摘要

The advancing globalisation of the economy and an increase in the mobility of people, their concentration in cities and material consumption bring detrimental effects to the social sphere and the natural environment. Their consequences are ever- growing and ever more complicated urban problems. Their manifestations are mounting ethnic conflicts, growing material disproportions (poverty), an expanding scope of social exclusion, advancing disintegration of urban communities, rising unemployment, and a diminishing sense of safety. These problems are a challenge to cities of the 21st century which they have to face in the time of an increasingly global economy. In a global approach, crime shows a very high growth dynamics. Its principal cause is dynamic urbanisation, especially population inflows to large cities: according to the UN HABITAT report, by the year 2030,60% of the world population will live in towns. Even more importantly, the urban population grows more steeply in the developing countries, which has been termed the "urbanisation of poverty". Connected with this are a rise in the number of big cities in the world, mounting tension resulting from a change in lifestyles, and scientific and technological progress at an unprecedented scale. The article presents changes that have been taking place in cities as a result of the growing process of globalisation, characterises some general tendencies observed in cities throughout the world in terms of one of the most crucial negative effects of the globalisation of social life, viz. crime, and describes the effect of globalisation on the level of crime in Polish cities.
