摘要

Traditionally urban transportation planning has not included walking, cycling and other nonmotorised modes of travel in trip generation and modal split models. The transportation solutions have concentrated on building more roads or developing new transit facilities. With renewed interest in nonmotorised modes, it is prudent to introduce cycling in urban transportation planning process. This will result in engineering development of bicycle infrastructure facilities and an integrated transport system. In addition to the normal constituents of modal utility such as cost, travel time, safety and comfort; special factors such as environmental and ecological impacts and health benefits will have to be incorporated to adequately represent the utility of non-motorised modes. There is scope to design and produce bicycles which can alleviate several shortcomings of the present day bicycles and increase the utility function of cycling mode further.
