The transmission of power across hydraulically fitted coupling hubs has been a common practice for many years. Although this type of attachment is generally accomplished without incident, occasionally problems do occur. In the following case history, a refrigeration compressor experienced a spun coupling hub approximately one hour after startup. Following several revolutions of uncoupled operation, the shaft and coupling hub reattached themselves causing distress in the intermediate gearbox and high speed load coupling. The data presented in this paper documents the initial startup, and specialized high resolution data processing techniques used to dissect the transient behavior as the coupling slipped allowing the turbine to speed up and the compressor to slow down. This uncoupled behavior lasted for 0.45 seconds before the coupling hub and compressor shaft became reattached and excited the system first torsional resonance.
