摘要

During the past year, the United States Department of Energy (USDOE) has failed again to meetrnits commitment to begin construction on the treatment facility required to vitrify Hanford’s highrnlevel tank waste by July 2001. As a result, Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology)rnhas initiated enforcement action which accumulates fines of ten thousand dollars per week.rnUSDOE is required to submit a plan in the Fall of 2001, assuring a specific date for start ofrnconstruction and show adequate funding. This paper will describe the status of this uniquernenforcement action and the progress of permits required to be issued by the state under thernrequirements of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. This paper is a major update ofrnthe WM ’01 paper Ecology presented at last year conference, one necessitated by recent eventsrnassociated with USDOE’s inability to meet key Tri-Party Agreement milestones.
