The American Water Works Association recognizes the need to develop standardsfor equipment, chemicals, and procedures throughout the water industry. With a richheritage of specifications dating back to the turn of the century written on everythingfrom iron salts to coagulant aids to risk management, approved standards function asan operating guide for its members.Five years ago the need was expressed by its members that certain technical issueson engineered flow meters, used through out the industry required clarification.Recognizing this, the American Water Works Association formed Committee 372,Rate-Type Flowmeters. The committee抯 charter was to develop and maintainstandards and related material for a certain class of flow meters, which includeddifferential pressure, and ultrasonic flow meters.The committee was staffed with a cross section of members ranging from producersof the equipment to users or consumers of the equipment, as well as members ofgeneral interest, which included Consulting Engineers and Agencies from the FederalGovernment. Since its inception the Committee has rustled with the desire of theindustry for standardization and simplification with the realization that eachmanufactures product was too unique for this to occur. In addition, the Committeerealized that the scope was too limited with just these products and expanded toinclude magnetic flow meters to insure a good cross section of instrumentation.To date the Committee has published a technical article on the ultrasonic in theAWWA Journal and has submitted to the Standards Council a daft Standards forconsideration. In addition the Committee has submitted for review draft standards onthe Venturi and Magnetic Flowmeters. This paper will present the findings from theCommittee.
