The competition between polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogenaccumulatingrnnon-polyphosphate organisms (GAOs) were evaluated using mathematical modelrnsimulations. The models for PAOs and GAOs were calibrated and able to provide satisfactoryrnpredictions of acetate, ortho-phosphate, biomass glycogen, biomass polyhydroxyalkanoatesrn(PHAs), and biomass concentrations compared with experimental observations. It wasrndemonstrated that both anaerobic acetate uptake and aerobic distribution of stored PHAs arernimportant factors in determining the competition between PAOs and GAOs. At 30oC and 10-dayrnsludge age, the kinetic advantage of anaerobic acetate uptake for GAOs is one of the mostrnimportant factors in determining the competition between PAOs and GAOs. At 30oC and 3-dayrnsludge age, aerobic glycogen formation rate for GAOs ( GAOrngl q ), in addition to anaerobic acetaternuptake, was demonstrated to be an important factor in determining the dominance between PAOsrnand GAOs. In addition, the mathematical models were able to simulate the coexistence of PAOsrnand GAOs at 30oC and 5-day sludge age
