Fertilization effect on fiber dimensions of Eucalyptus urophylla

In order to investigate the effects the of fertilizer on fiber dimensions of eucalyptus wood, fiber length and width were studied within every growth increment of 25 Eucalyptus urophylla trees of 9 years old from 5 different experimental plots. The experimental plots were designed initially to investigate fertilization effects on growth rates, with all other environmental conditions controlled to a minimum difference. Based on the obtained data, effects of fertilization treatments on fiber dimensions were analyzed and discussed. Results show that fertilization treatment has no significant effect on fiber length, but it has a significant influence on fiber width. According to this study, fiber length of Eucalyptus urophylla was mainly determined by tree age, and the matured average fiber length measured 1000-1100μm, which the fibers from all the sample trees could reach at the age of 7 to 8 years. For fiber width, the smallest average value of 16.4μm was found in the sample trees from plot Dl which had no fertilization treatment; and the largest average value of 17.6μm was found in the sample trees from plot D3 treated with 50kgP/ Ha, and from D5 treated with (100kgN+50kgK+30kgMg+5kgCu+5kgZn +lkgB+0.2kgMo)/ ha. The results of this study indicate that fiber length is an inherent attribute of wood species, it is hardly influenced by environmental factors.
