At this dawn of a new century, reflection on the future trends that can be imagined in the development of materials and structures is very pertinent. In this paper, the aspects addressed are the following: a) comments on the management of R&D activities related to the process of innovation, b) the benefits of leadership, c) the organization of research units and d) the role of international associations, in particular Rilem.
