Over the last century, we have made great progress in cement and concrete research and development. We can now produce high strength, durable, and self-compacting concretes, made possible by our better understanding of the hydration process, and by advances in admixture technology. From reading the recent cement and concrete literature, it would appear that all of the significant problems have already been solved. The questions then remain: Why do we still continue to produce concrete that is not durable, that cracks excessively, and that is environmentally unfriendly? Why do we still have concrete failures? This presentation will focus on some of the reasons for this sorry state of affairs (e.g. inadequately trained engineers, poorly trained workforce, insufficient transfer of technology from the researchers to the field, politicization of professional organization, the litigation industry, and so on). It will conclude with some suggestions for both research and practice that may help to alleviate some of these problems.
