For many materials the study of microstructure has played an essential role in research aimed at their understanding and improvement. For cementitious materials the great heterogeneity of the microstructure makes the extraction of comparative information difficult. However, because of this, it is important that such characterization should be quantitative rather than qualitative. Backscattered electron images of polished sections studied in the scanning electron microscope, coupled with local microanalysis, are fruitful techniques for quantitative characterization as illustrated by the example of the study of delayed ettringite formation in mortars cured at elevated temperatures. However, many images must be analyzed, or points analyzed to obtain a statistically valid description of the average microstructure. Further development of such techniques is possible and it is believed that particularly promising approaches are integration with other techniques, such as quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Rietveld analysis.
