摘要

This book has arisen from a causative chain of events, stimulated largely by the outstanding challenges offered to three of the organisers of the associated workshop by researching and teaching within the Soil Mechanics Group at Cambridge University. This was followed by appointment of the author to a chair at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in January 1997, where subsequent research themes have included constitutive modelling of typical Swiss soils together with the development of a geotechnical centrifuge facility.
