Se is an essential trace element. In diabetes mellitus both its antioxidant properties and its insulin-like effect are of significant importance. Serum Se concentrations and whole blood GSHPx activity of 22 Hungarian type 1 diabetic subjects and 40 controls - matched in age and BMI - were measured. All diabetics were on intensive insulin therapy, the mean HbA1c value was 7.5±1.8%. Type 1 diabetics had a slightly higher serum Se concentration than the controls but statistically the difference between the two groups was not significant. Whole blood GSHPx activity was significantly lower in diabetic patients (51 vs. 56 U/g H, p≤0.05). Se levels declined after the age of 50 and were slightly lower in women than in men. Smoking had a somewhat lowering effect on Se concentration, particularly in diabetic subjects.
