It is known that zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) can affect the cholesterol esters biosynthesis and lipid concentrations in patients with atherosclerosis. Since gender differences in plasma lipid profile as risk factors for CHD are recognized, therefore the aim of this study was to compare the serum Zn, Cu levels, lipid profile, lipase (GEH) and acyltransferase triacylglycerol : cholesterol (GECAT) activities between men and woman with CHD. The subjects of the study were 21 male and 18 female outpatients with CHD. The levels of triacylglycerols (TAG), total cholesterol (TC), low (LDL-C) and high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein A and B (Apo-A and Apo-B), and the enzyme (GECAT, GEH) activities were assayed by methods ascribed elsewhere (Patelski and Piorunska-Stolzmann 1979). Zn and Cu levels were determined by using an atomic absorption spectrometry (Iskra et al. 1997). The lowering TAG and HDL-C with a concurrent rise in Apo-A levels of women were found, when compared with men group. Sex of patients did not affect the GEH and GECAT activities. The higher Cu was assayed in women when compared with men, whereas Zn levels did not differ. The negative correlations between Cu and TAG were found in woman. Moreover, the strong correlation coefficient between Zn and GECAT but only in woman was observed. In conclusion, the role of these elements should be taken into consideration in evaluating the cholesterol transacylation process in serum of patients, especially women with CHD.
