This paper presents the experimental and finite element studies on the effects of reservoir water level onthe dynamic response of the existing arch dam. The measured dynamic properties are compared topredictions from finite element models, for which the discontinuities due to the nonlinear behavior of thevertical contraction joints are both included and neglected. The computed results demonstrate that theobserved variation of the frequencies was attributed to a modification in the arch stiffness due to thenonlinear effect of the joints. Furthermore, the joint opening effects on dynamic response of the arch damwill be discussed.
