A new seismic strengthening method using outer-frame braces is proposed. The braces are attachedoutside the structural frames of existing buildings and linked via newly added reinforced concrete beams.This method involves uncomplicated works to achieve highly-effective resistance against severeearthquakes. Shear force during an earthquake is transferred from the existing structure to the bracesthrough connecting beams. Therefore, accurate evaluation of connecting beam performance is essential.Based on 1/3-scale specimens, four reinforced concrete frames were tested under lateral loads. The testvariables were: with/without the attached brace and failure mode of the frame. This paper describes theperformance of the reinforced concrete frames strengthened by using attached braces, and evaluation ofthe resultant strength of the frame.
