A Study on Microstructure of Solution Treated and Aged SP-700 Titanium Alloy

SP-700 with a nominal chemical composition of Ti-4.5Al-3V-2Fe-2Mo was originally developed for superior superplastic forming capability at temperatures below 800℃, but it has been proved that this alloy also shows other advantages such as improved heat treatability. A wide range of tensile strength can be attained by solution treatment and aging; up to 1400MPa by water quenching in solution treatment, and 1250MPa by air cooling. This alloy also exhibits very quick age hardening behavior in water quenched conditions. In this study, phase transformation of solution treatment and aging was investigated by SEM and TEM analysis, and the resultant tensile properties of heat treated SP-700 were discussed. Quick age hardening behavior in water quenched SP-700 may be promoted by the formation of ω phase in the solution treatment condition and quick transformation from ω to α phase by aging. Very fine secondary α precipitates were observed in the transformed β phase in water quenched and aged SP-700, and acicular α was observed in air cooled and aged SP-700. Transformation in β phase plays a significant role in the strengthening behavior of this alloy, and morphology of precipitates in β phase also influences ductility. More void formations occur during deformation in air cooled SP-700, and water quenched SP-700 shows better ductility and higher notch tensile strength.
