Mechanical Properties of SP-700 Titanium Alloy at Room Temperature

An α+β titanium alloy with a nominal chemical composition of Ti-4.5Al-3V-2Fe-2Mo has been approved in Aerospace Material Specifications; AMS 4899 covers its sheet and plate products, and AMS 4964 does the bar and billet products. In addition, the design data of its sheet and bar products in mill-annealed condition were published in MIL-Handbook-5, which includes the design allowables of metallic aerospace materials. This alloy was primarily developed for superplastic forming application, and was named SP-700 from its excellent superplasticity at 700℃ level, but other properties have also been improved such as heat-treatablity, fatigue properties and cold formability. In this paper, mechanical properties data of mill-annealed SP-700 products, which were filed for approval of AMS specification and MIL-HDBK-5, are reviewed from the viewpoint of the statistical analysis. They include static tensile strength, fatigue strength and fracture toughness at room temperature. Fatigue property, one of the biggest advantages of SP-700, is evaluated with respect to the notch effects and the surface roughness conditions. Cold formability is another advantage of SP-700, though conventional high strength α+β titanium alloys lack it, and its benefit is studied by cold bend capability.
