Fracture characteristics of forged plate of Ti-4.5Al-3V-2Mo-2Fe, a β-rich α+β type titanium alloy registered in AMS no. 4899-4964, conducted with single and duplex-annealing treatments in α+β field are investigated. Tensile strength of the alloy increases with increasing annealing temperature from 1103 K to 1123 K, and then decreases slightly up to 1173 K for both kinds of the heat treatments. The tensile strength of longitudinal direction and short direction is slightly different. The fracture toughness, J_(IC), decreases with the increase of annealing temperature from 1023 K to 1123 K and increases with further increasing temperature up to 1173 K. The fracture toughness of longitudinal direction is much greater than that of short direction. Fracture surface morphologies show dimples, a typical ductile fracture. The specimen containing coarser acicular α in β phase tends to have longer crack path indicating that the crack deflection is more effective in the alloy containing a coarse secondary phase.
