摘要

Multi functional beta titanium alloy "Gum Metal" has been developed. The alloy simultaneously possesses multi functions: ultra-low elastic modulus, ultra-high strength, ultra-high elastic deformability free from thermo-elastic martensitic transformation, super ductility at room temperature without work hardening, and Invar and Elinvar properties. The fundamental composition of the developed alloy group is expressed as Ti-24mol% (Ta+Nb+V) - (Zr, Hf) - O. Furthermore, it shares the following electronic magic numbers: (ⅰ) a compositional average valance electron number (e/a) of around 4.24; (ⅱ) based on the Dv-Xa method, a compositional average "bond order (Bo)" of around 2.87; and (ⅲ) a "d electron orbital energy level (Md)" of around 2.45. The "super" properties are realized when all these electronic conditions are satisfied simultaneously. In order to exhibit all the unique properties, each alloy requires a cold working and the existence of a certain amount of oxygen not less than 0.7 mol %. The cold working brings non-linearity in elasticity, with the gradient of the stress strain curve continuously decreasing with the stress increases. In addition, no amount of plastic deformation at room temperature causes work hardening and decreases ductility, which is a beneficial property for the practical use of "Gum Metal."
