In this paper, a simple mathematical procedure for estimating the solar absorptance of an open water pond is presented based on the fact that the solar radiation trapped inside the pond undergoes multiplicative reflection and absorption, and on that the solar absorption of water is related to the spectral wavelength. Analysis indicates that an accurate estimation of solar absorptance of a water pond must accurately know the solar spectrums of both beam and diffuse radiation on the ground level which are impossible to be available in any place of the world. Results by numerical calculations also show that, for a given horizontal radiation, the pattern of solar spectrum chosen for the calculations has considerable influences on both beam and diffuse solar absorptance, but has negligible effects on the solar heat gain of a water pond.
