An analysis of geo-hazard characteristics and susceptibility assessment in Ziyang district, China are presented.At first, a geological disasters survey was carried out to collect the data sets of geological hazards in this district and the characteristics and controlling parameters of geo-hazards were analysed from 3 and 6 aspects, respectively.According to the parameters, 9 factors namely, slope, gradient, slope aspect, slope shape, lithology, distance from faults, distance from rivers, distance from roads and annual rainfall were chosen as the impact factors which affected the occurrence of geo-hazards.In order to determine the importance that 9 impact factors had on the occurrence of geo-hazards, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to calculated the weight coefficients of these factors.Using grid computing tools in ArcGIS, superposed calculation was adopted on the 9 factor weights and geological disasters susceptibility assessment was finished.At last, a susceptibility map was created and showed 3 classes of geological disasters susceptibility, i.e., high, moderate and low.The assessment results showed satisfactory agreement between the existing geological disasters and susceptibility map.
